Learning and Development New Trends in the global Context
Learning
and development is organizational needs based however its importance has
reached strategic levels in global firms. CIPD (2015) in its survey suggested
that learning and development strategy is extremely linked to business needs in
the modern company. On the other hand,
learning and development has also been influenced by advancements in technology
largely Online learning and development programs are in the increase internet
or intranet based. Learning is delivered through remote locations via mobile
handheld devices too.
Other Changes in Learning and
Development
As
a SHRM function other developments in L & D are Competency Based Training are
increasing in importance as competencies give a company reference language to
employer hence recruitment and selection processes are simplified and levels of
accuracy is higher.
Extensive
L&D for employees, managers and talent pools to enhance core competencies
and achieve sustainability is a Key Role in the contemporary organization
companies such as Canon Inc in its Optics and Health care company extensively
used training for its employees. (www.usa.canonInc.com, 2017)
Companies
such as Nestle’s in addition to L&D go a step further to educated employees
in markets including Africa where literacy rates are low. On the other hand,
they also develop people by supporting research scientist to conduct studies as
part of their PhD programs.
Senior
managers are involved in L&D programs to develop organization culture,
mentor employees, coach to enhance performance, productivity bring in
transformational leadership development among various levels of management in
NHS of the UK. The National Health Services of Sri Lanka sponsors doctors to
train and qualify for PhD programs called Doctor in Medicine (MD). Additional
there is continuous training for medical professional on a regular basis with
the teaching hospital (Samarakoon, Fernando,
and Rodrigo, 2013). The diagram below illustrate the process of L&D.
Learning
and development is delivered internally by large organisations, however, its
common to use external sources of learning as sometimes certifications are
mandatory as in the case of Medical Care professionals such as Medical
Technician, Radiographers, and Specialist Nurses. On the other hand, specific
professions also demand certification and NVQ’s as in the case of Airports
where quarantine of sick persons, animals or plants are need for National
Security and Health Reasons.
